Summary:
The burial of Jesus. When Joseph and Nicodemus arrived at Calvary, they saw the soldiers taking Jesus down from the cross, and the representatives of the Sanhedrin standing by and making sure that none of Jesus' followers prevented the transfer of his body to the burial pits for criminals. When Joseph presented the centurion with an order from Pilate to hand over the Master's body to him, the Jews raised an uproar, loudly demanding that it be given to them. When in their rage they tried to seize the body, the centurion called four soldiers, who - swords drawn and legs apart - stood over the body of the prostrate Master. The centurion ordered the rest of the soldiers to leave the two thieves and disperse the crowd of enraged Jews. After restoring order, the centurion read Pilate's permission to the Jews and, stepping aside, said to Joseph: “The body is at your disposal; do with him as you see fit. I and my soldiers will accompany you so that no one will hinder you.
They brought the body into the tomb, a room approximately 3 by 3 meters long, where they hurriedly prepared Jesus for burial. Strictly speaking, the Jews did not bury their dead: in fact, they embalmed them. Joseph and Nicodemus brought with them a large quantity of myrrh and aloes, and now they wrapped the body in bandages soaked in these solutions. Completing the embalming, they bound his face with a cloth, wrapped the body in a linen sheet, and reverently laid it in the niche of the tomb.
After the body was placed in the tomb, the centurion called his soldiers to help block the entrance to the tomb with the stone.
